Clinical Pharmacist at Pill4Me

As of 2023, registered pharmacists in British Columbia can independently assess and prescribe treatments for 21 minor ailments — without a doctor's referral or appointment. This is one of the most significant expansions of pharmacy practice in BC history.

What can a pharmacist prescribe for?

The 21 conditions in scope include:

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Oral and genital herpes (cold sores)
  • Vaginal yeast infections (candidiasis)
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)
  • Atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Impetigo
  • Insect bites and stings
  • Athlete's foot (tinea pedis)
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Mild acne
  • Oral aphthous ulcers (canker sores)
  • Shingles (herpes zoster)
  • Dysmenorrhea (painful periods)
  • Threadworms / pinworms
  • Calluses and corns
  • Plantar warts
  • Diaper rash
  • Nicotine dependence
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Contraception (oral, patch, ring)
  • How the assessment works

You come into Pill4Me, describe your symptoms, and your pharmacist conducts a structured clinical assessment. If the condition is within scope and your symptoms are consistent with an uncomplicated case, we can issue a prescription on the spot. The whole visit typically takes 10–20 minutes.

When we'll refer you to a doctor

Some presentations require physician assessment — for example, a UTI with fever (suggesting kidney involvement), or pink eye with reduced vision or severe pain. Your pharmacist will refer you appropriately and can document the assessment for your doctor's record.

    Is this service covered?

Assessment fees for pharmacist-prescribed minor ailments are covered by BC PharmaCare for eligible patients — you don't pay for the visit. You pay for the prescribed medication according to your regular drug plan (some medications may be fully covered, others subject to deductibles).
