Ozempic & BC PharmaCare: What's Covered and What Isn't in 2025

Ozempic (semaglutide) is one of the most talked-about medications in Canada right now — for weight management, cardiovascular protection, and type 2 diabetes. But BC PharmaCare coverage for semaglutide comes with conditions that many patients aren't aware of until they arrive at the pharmacy and see the full price.

Is Ozempic covered by BC PharmaCare?

Yes — but only with Special Authority (SA) approval, and only for specific indications.

As of 2025, BC PharmaCare covers Ozempic (semaglutide 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg) for adults with type 2 diabetes who meet criteria including:

What about Ozempic for weight loss?

Ozempic is not covered by PharmaCare for weight management in most patients. Wegovy (semaglutide 2.4 mg), the higher-dose formulation approved for obesity, is similarly not broadly covered.

If you're prescribed semaglutide for weight management without SA approval, you'll pay the full cash price — which at the doses used for weight loss can be substantial.

How long does Special Authority take?

SA decisions are typically made within 5–10 business days for non-urgent requests. Urgent SA can sometimes be expedited. Your prescriber should submit through the Health Authority SA system or directly to PharmaCare.

What to do while waiting for SA approval
