If your first instinct when you get a UTI, a cold sore, or a yeast infection is to call your family doctor — you're not alone. Most people don't know that since June 2023, BC pharmacists have been authorized to assess and prescribe for 21 common conditions without a doctor's referral.
No waitlist. No walk-in clinic lineup. Often same day.
This is called the Minor Ailments and Contraception Service — or MACS — and it's one of the most underused healthcare resources in BC right now.
What Is the BC MACS Program?
The BC government expanded pharmacist prescribing authority in June 2023, allowing licensed pharmacists who have completed the required regulatory training to independently assess patients and write prescriptions for a defined list of conditions.
The assessment is covered by BC PharmaCare — meaning there is no fee for the consultation itself. Your prescription is then filled under your existing PharmaCare plan with your normal co-pay.
At Pill4Me on Promontory Rd in Chilliwack, both our pharmacy manager and clinical pharmacist are MACS-authorized. You can walk in or book an appointment through our online portal.
The 21 Conditions Covered
Here is the full list of conditions your Pill4Me pharmacist can assess and prescribe for:
Infections
Skin and allergies
Pain and digestive
Other
If you're unsure whether your condition qualifies, call us at 604-705-3644 before coming in and we'll tell you right away.
How the Assessment Works — Step by Step
A MACS visit at Pill4Me follows a structured process required by the College of Pharmacists of BC:
Step 1 — Consent. Your pharmacist explains the service and what the assessment involves before starting.
Step 2 — PharmaNet review. We review your complete BC medication history to check for drug interactions, allergies, and previous treatments for the same condition.
Step 3 — Assessment. Your pharmacist assesses your symptoms and relevant medical history in a private consultation area. For most conditions this takes 5 to 15 minutes.
Step 4 — Treatment. If your condition is within scope and treatment is appropriate, your pharmacist writes a prescription and fills it on the spot.
Step 5 — Counselling. You receive clear instructions on how to use your medication, what side effects to watch for, and what to do if symptoms don't improve.
Step 6 — Follow-up plan. We document the visit and tell you specifically when to seek further care from a doctor if needed.
One thing to know: BC MACS regulations require an in-person assessment. Phone and video consultations are not eligible for PharmaCare coverage under this program. You need to come into the pharmacy — but given that we're right here in Promontory, that's often faster than getting a walk-in clinic appointment anyway.

What About Cost?
Assessment fee: BC PharmaCare pays for In-Person MACS assessment. This means the consultation costs you nothing.
Prescription: Filled under your existing PharmaCare plan (Fair PharmaCare, Plan C, Plan W, First Nations Health Benefits, etc.) with your normal co-pay and deductible. Most minor ailment medications are inexpensive — many under $20 even without coverage.
No PharmaCare? Private pay is available. We'll tell you the exact cost before dispensing anything — you're never surprised.
Real Situations Where This Saves You Time
UTI on a Friday afternoon. Your doctor's office is closed. The walk-in clinic has a 2-hour wait. You feel awful. Come to Pill4Me — we assess, prescribe, and fill your antibiotic the same visit. You're home with your medication in under 30 minutes.
Child with pink eye the morning of school picture day. Most cases of conjunctivitis in children are straightforward. We assess, determine whether it's bacterial or viral, and provide treatment or guidance without a pediatrician visit.
